Why Does Coconut Oil Solidify? (And Is It Normal?)

One of the most common questions we get at Lacca is — "My coconut oil has turned white and solid. Is it spoiled?"
The short answer: No. It's completely normal.
Why does coconut oil solidify?
Coconut oil solidifies below approximately 24°C. This is because it is over 90% saturated fat, which is naturally solid at room temperature in cooler climates. Unlike most cooking oils that remain liquid, coconut oil transitions between solid and liquid based on temperature.
Is solid coconut oil still good?
Yes, absolutely. Solidification does not affect the quality, nutrients, or freshness of the oil. In fact, pure, unadulterated coconut oil solidifies cleanly and uniformly. If your coconut oil stays liquid at room temperature in a cool climate, that can actually be a sign of adulteration.
How to melt it:
Simply place the bottle in warm water for a few minutes, or leave it in a warm spot. Do not microwave the glass bottle directly.
A note on Lacca oils:
All Lacca coconut oils — Urukku Vellichenna, Cold Pressed VCO, and Hot Pressed VCO — will solidify in cooler temperatures. This is a sign of purity, not a defect. Our Refined Coconut Oil may remain liquid longer due to the refining process.
